to K-9 ASTRONOMY STUDIES GROUP 2021 and our "Our Location in the Universe" project website!

On completion of the ASG summer course you will be given your very own Virtual Reality/VR Headset to keep.

You can look at your artwork and show your friends and relatives whenever you like through links on this website.

Announcements:

We will have 4 morning Zooms 10-11:30 am (Tuesday-Friday) during our first week.  Each 1.5 hour Zoom Session will have regular breaks built in. The last 30 minutes of each Zoom session will be "making art" time. There will be 2 additional sessions: one to receive your VR headset (at outdoors location/field trip) and the final session to get basic instructions how to use it.

Materials Suggested:  What to have in your "Making Kit".

• Find some circles (different diameters- at least 2 sizes) in your home. (These can be plates, spice jars, glasses, cups, cans of food, water bottle, bowls, mixing bowl, or other - anything that has a flat bottom and is round.)

• Pencil (or pen) for drawing.

• Paper. (Paper can be wrapping paper, white paper, paper bag, newspaper, magazine, thin cardboard, etc)

• Scissors, crayons or colored pencils 

• AND what ever art supplies you have …

• optional: string, ribbon, Scotch tape or glue

Summer Schedule 2021
June 15-18, June 22, and July 1

Week 1:  June 15-18

Day 1:  June 15, 2021 - 10-11:30 am (Virtual Zoom)

First day - introductions to the summer "Astronomy Studies Group", students and project directors

Mapping intro and start Micro / Google Earth / Where are we in the Universe?

This website is posted (public) and available for you to use when and how you want (link above). You can find information about some of the content and art explored in this ASG workshop. On completion of this workshop, you will be able to view your artworks as part of a short Virtual Reality (VR) Video accessible through a link on this website. (To navigate through the website, select/click the page link on the top menu bar, "more", OR the "Back" button near the bottom/right of the webpage.)

MAKING (30 min):  HAVE FUN EXPLORING ART and SCIENCE !

Let's talk about "making" to create pictures (or objects), and how to show and submit your artworks at the end of zoom classes (holding your drawing up in front of your face so we see your creations!)

​

The last 30 minutes of each Virtual/Zoom Class will be our making session - you will actually make artwork during this time!  Special instructions relevant to your current making project will be delivered during this time. (If you need help, just raise your hand and Mr. Panagos or Ms. Jody will help you! Don't be shy :)

Your Making Kit:

• At least two sizes of circular objects found in your home: (can be cups, plates, bowls, food cans, jars, water bottle, small spice jar ...)

• Crayons, pencil, colored pencils, or other drawing materials

• Paper - this can be: White paper, sketch book, wrapping paper, newspaper, magazine, paper bag, cardboard ...

• scissors (to cut shapes)

• Any other art supplies you have in your home

• optional: string, ribbon, scotch tape, glue stick

Talk about making circles, lines, seeing colors, shapes, textures, filling in shapes, shading, perspective/POV  ...

Art is personal expression! There is no right or wrong way to "making" ... explore, create and have fun!

Select ONE of these locations that most interests you. What do these 4 locations have in common?

Think About: Why did you pick this image/location? What is it about this image you like?

Start drawing it or something related that you see on this website/research.  (You can continue/finish it in our next making session tomorrow - if you finish early, draw another one!!!)

You will be assigned TWO planets (in our solar system!) to create]/draw. What is unique about "your" planets?

Talk about making circles, texture, color, size (relative)

TO DO: Planets / Create your planets /show / submit your two planet creations

Day 4: June 18, 2021  10-11:30 am (Virtual Zoom)

Fourth day curriculum / announcements

TO DO: Planets / continue / create / show / submit your TWO planets

Week 2 & 3:

Day 5: June 22, 2021 (Tuesday) - 11:30 am - In-person outdoors Field Trip 
Location: Solar Calendars, Cesar Chavez Park, Berkeley, CA

FIELD TRIP, Astronomy and MAKINGHAVE FUN EXPLORING ART and SCIENCE !

We will meet in -person outdoors at the lands end turn-around of Cesar Chavez Park - by the water. We will all walk together to the the Solar Calendars. You will be given your personal Virtual Reality/VR Headset and participate in our interpretive session. Everyone will take your VR headset with you as we walk up the hill to the solar calendars. We will talk about the solar Calendars, take pictures with your VR headset on, and you can ask questions. The field trip will end around 1:15pm. (Student privacy will be respected)

TO DO: Draw the horizon ... at Solar Noon! What do you see?

Day 6: July 1, 2021  (Thursday)- 10-11:30 am (Virtual Zoom)

VIRTUAL REALITY (VR)HAVE FUN EXPLORING ART and SCIENCE !

Basic instruction: How to use your VR Headset and view your artwork in 360/VR!

A brief introduction to Virtual Reality and thinking immersively
